2. Hallmarks of Aging: An Evolving Concept

The Hallmarks of Aging provide a conceptual framework for understanding the main molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in aging. Since their initial description, this model has evolved alongside scientific advances, incorporating new processes and offering an increasingly comprehensive view of the complexity of aging.

From 9 to 12 Hallmarks of Aging

The original proposal, published in 2013, identified nine fundamental mechanisms of aging. Ten years later, the framework was updated to incorporate new processes, expanding to the 12 Hallmarks of Aging and reflecting an increasingly comprehensive and dynamic view of aging.

Three Groups to Understand Their Evolution

Currently, the Hallmarks of Aging are classified into primary, antagonistic, and integrative hallmarks. Primary hallmarks are associated with the accumulation of cellular damage; antagonistic hallmarks involve initially compensatory responses that may become detrimental over time; and integrative hallmarks emerge when damage exceeds the capacity of homeostatic mechanisms.
