What is Atopic Skin and What Does It Need

Atopic dermatitis is characterised by a weakened skin barrier that loses lipids and water more easily, causing extreme dryness, inflammation and itching. It affects both children and adults and requires ingredients that restore the lipid layer and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

Skin Barrier and Chronic Inflammation

In atopic skin, the deficiency of ceramides and essential fatty acids compromises the skin barrier. This facilitates the entry of irritants and allergens, triggering cycles of inflammation and itching. Cosmetic formulation must provide lipids compatible with the epidermis and calming actives.

The global prevalence of atopic dermatitis has increased by 20% in the last decade. The skin barrier repair trend, accelerated post-pandemic, positions sensitive and atopic skin as the fastest growing segment in cosmetics. Formulators are looking for actives with documented in vivo efficacy that restore the skin barrier without fragrances, irritating preservatives or potentially allergenic ingredients.

Why is atopic skin the most dynamic segment in clinical cosmetics?

Cobiosa Actives for Atopic Skin

Cobiosa offers three ingredients especially indicated for atopic-prone skin: Omega Butter as a nourishing and repairing butter, Phyto Ceramidyl Omega N as a source of vegan ceramides and Ethomega as a protective blend of chia and Sacha Inchi oils.

Omega Butter: nutrition and comfort

Omega Butter (INCI: Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil, C10-18 Triglycerides) is a 100% natural butter composed of 70% Sacha Inchi and 30% Tuscan olive oil triglycerides. With 48.6% omega 3, it reduces hypersensitivity, TEWL, and is more moisturising than shea butter. Suitable for very sensitive skin and baby care.

Phyto Ceramidyl Omega N: vegan ceramides

Phyto Ceramidyl Omega N combines NP ceramides, fatty acids from Plukenetia Volubilis seed oil and Olea Europaea glycerides. The balance between these components facilitates the transport of NP ceramides to the skin barrier.
Formulated at 5%, this active achieved an 11.6% reduction in neck wrinkles in 30 days according to efficacy data.
