Maca in Cosmetics: Context and Value
Lepidium meyenii, known as maca, is an Andean plant cultivated for centuries for its nutritional properties.
Its root concentrates proteins in a higher proportion than other plants, along with 18 essential amino acids, minerals such as Fe, Zn, Mn and Ca, B-group vitamins and bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids and saponins.
Why Formulators Are Interested
The phytochemical diversity of maca makes it suitable for acting on several cutaneous and hair mechanisms at once.
Glucosinolates and alkaloids have documented biological activity, while amino acids provide structural substrate for the hair fibre. This multifunctionality simplifies formulation without the need to accumulate independent actives.
Adaptogens — ingredients that help the body manage stress — are making a strong entry into the hair cosmetics sector. Andean maca, known in nutrition for its energising and adaptogenic properties, is one of the hair actives with the greatest potential for 2026. The ingestibles-topicals crossover trend and ingredients of Latin American origin are on the radar of global premium brands.
Why are botanical adaptogens trending in hair cosmetics?

Radiancyl: INCI, Dosage and Efficacy
Radiancyl is the botanical maca extract developed by Cobiosa, with INCI Propanediol, Aqua, Lepidium Meyenii Extract.
It is water-soluble, with a recommended usage dose of between 3 and 5%, and holds COSMOS Approved, Halal, Vegan and China Compliant certifications. Its natural origin content is 100% according to ISO 16128.
In vitro data: fibroblasts
In an in vitro assay, human fibroblasts seeded with maca root extract were evaluated by resazurin on day 5.
The results, expressed as a percentage relative to untreated control cells, showed that Radiancyl stimulated fibroblast growth by 70%. This data positions the active as relevant in formulations oriented towards skin renewal.
In vivo data: hair thickness and vellus
A study on 10 male subjects with weakened hair evaluated the use of 2% shampoo and 10% ampoule of Radiancyl for 8 weeks, applied 3 times per week.
Accumulated hair thickness increased by 18.1% and the vellus hair ratio decreased by 29.8%. Individual thickness increased by an average of 19.45% in 90% of volunteers, with a maximum of 38.65%.
